This last 10,11 and 12 of September, in Alqueva Dam, the biggest artificial lake in Europe, was held the Alqueva's Classic, the 4the event of APPA 2004 Tournament (APPA - The biggest Bass Fishing Organization in Portugal which helds the biggest tournament in Portugal - a 4 event tournament).

The event had the enthusiastic participation of 78 teams (29 from Spain).

It was expected a very good event with lots of captures, because Alqueva is a very new and wonderful fishery and that did happen. Almost all the Teams managed to achieve the 5 limit fish in each day of the competition. In the first day 322 basses where caught with 232,870 Kg and in the second day 316 basses with 227,980 Kg.

More than 700 grams for each bass (1 pound 10 ounces). The difficult part was being able to achieve bass above 1Kg (2-3 pound bass). Those who could where able to surpass the 3,500 Kg (8 pounds) and could hope to win the event.

A local team of fisherman, who know very well the dam, João Grosso e Fernando Cruz, where the big winners of this event, with a total of 10 fish and almost 11Kg (almost 25 pounds).  They caught most of their fish with a Texas approach and big Kreature baits and did not allowed any other team to come close, leading from the first day with 5,200Kg and achieving even a bigger weight the 2nd day (5,670Kg) with a 2,010Kg fish. They won 2500 euros of prize money. Congratulations!!

The team Mário Nelson and Luís Palma, also a local team used well the weeks before the event training hard and managed the second place (a 1st day with 5,140Kg and a 2nd day with 4,840 Kg - total 9,980Kg (22 pounds)) wining 1500 euros of prize money.

In third place another Portuguese Team António Casimiro e Gualdino Angelino, managed an excellent recovery pulling from 13th place in the first day (4,300Kg) to 3rd place (5,080 Kg the second day and 9,380 Kg total- 20 pound, 8 ounces). They won 1000 euros of prize money.

5 Spanish teams in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places managed to out fish several Portuguese Teams, some with a very good knowledge of the local waters, which only shows the very good quality of the Spanish Teams present, the majority of them had never fished in Alqueva before. Fernando Gutierrez caught the biggest bass of the event with 2,160 Kg (4 pound 9 ounces).

In global terms a very good event with a remarkable organization effort in the biggest artificial dam of Europe.

APPA's Tournament 2004 - Final Standings

With the "Alqueva's Classic - Big Lake Event" that was held this last 11 and 12 of September, the APPA 2004 Tournament (a 4 event Tournament) came to an end.

The Team Jaime Sacadura e João Sacadura, managed to qualify above their more direct adversaries in this last event and in doing so, secured the win in the 2004 Tournament.

The 8,050 Kg in 10 fish (almost 18 pounds) that they caught allowed for a 10th place and those 10 points added to the 7 points achieved in the first 3 events what was good enough to maintain the lead in the Tournament.

This is the second win from this Team in the biggest Tournament in Portugal to add to their win in the Portuguese National Championship of 2004. They had managed to win both events in 2002. A very good 2004 year for Portugal's Nitro National Fishing Team.

Idalécio Martins e Samuel Valente, where also extremely regular and maintain pressure. A slip from the winning Team (which did almost happen) and they could win the Tournament. An excellent result for this Team.

José Guerreiro e Valter Guerreiro, which had placed 2nd in the National Championship, also managed to achieve a very good event.  They had hoped for a slip from the leading teams which did not happen and so they kept the 3th place in the Tournament. A very good year of competition for this Team.

In the photo, João Sacadura receives the awards for the biggest bass of the Tournament (a 6 pound 11 ounce bass) wich is the biggest bass ever caught in that APPA Tournament and in the National Championship. The Portuguese record stands at 10 pounds 14 ounces.
